Donald Trump: US government, congressional antitrust will affect India

Anti-monopoly actions against digital giants by the US government and Congress have the potential to significantly influence India due to their penetration in the country, but New Delhi will have limited capacity to exercise the same general control.

In the latest move, the House of Commons Judicial Committee announced on Monday that it is launching a broad anti-monopoly investigation by Google, Amazon, Apple and Facebook paving the way for legislation that affects their activities around the world.

At the other political end, the Ministry of Justice reported that it is preparing to conduct endurance detectors on Google and the Federal Trade Commission on Amazon.

Digital giants enjoying the research monopoly and the social media have made enemies on both sides of the political corridor: the Democrats because of their perception that the social media were responsible for the defeat of Hillary Clinton in the 2016 elections and the conservatives due to the belief that Google and some sections of the social media are biased against them. In addition, Washington Post, owned by Amazon's head Jeff Bezos, is a strict critic of President Donald Trump.

David Cicilline, Justice Commission Subcommittee spokesperson, told reporters in Washington that the group will investigate why the digital "market fails because the internet is broken and why it is not working well." Next, we will consider legislative action to address the situation, he added.

The digital giants did not react to the proposed antimonopoly detectors. But as part of a $ 5.1 billion EU fine to Google to include research and other apps on its Android operating system, Sundar Pichai, the US-led military leader, has denied that his company was a monopoly.

He had tweeted: "Rapid innovation, broad choice and price drop are classic features of strong competition. Android has allowed this and created more choice for everyone, no less."

Any US action on technology may have a greater impact on India than on the US in some cases because of the largest customer base in India, which, unlike China, has no alternatives to match them.

India has at least 300 million Facebook users, while there are only 210 million in the US, according to Statista. According to some estimates, India has WhatsApp users who are Facebook users, while in the US they are only tens of millions.

In India, Google is overwhelming the search and 98% of smartphones use its Android operating system.

YouTube has 245 million users in India and Google Pay, 22 million users, according to PC Magazine.

And Amazon has an Indian subsidiary that had sales of $ 8.8 billion.

But any legislative or administrative action to be taken in the US will significantly affect India because of its large customer base – and in the case of Google and Facebook and WhatsApp – of their political influence.

Splitting companies or imposing other restrictions from the US will affect their activities in India – and although India has a larger user base in the case of digital networks and a huge market share in the Amazon case, New Delhi will not have a similar reason in these issues.
