facebook: India continues to submit second most user data requests from Facebook

BENGALURU: India submitted the second highest number of requests after the United States for Facebook user data between July and December last year, according to the social media company's transparency report.

India has filed 26,698 claims against 39,664 users and accounts. Facebook said it responded to 57% of those requests. The government's demands have reached the all-time high of just 3,245 requests in the first six months of 2013.

Facebook said it was responding to government requests for data in accordance with applicable law and our terms of service. Any request we receive is carefully considered for legal adequacy and may reject or require more expertise in requests that appear too broad or vague, the company added.

Of the 26,698 claims, about 7% concerned emergencies, where law enforcement can file claims without legal action.
