Rat Year: See what's in stock for 2020

Hong Kong (CNN) – It's the busiest time of year for So Man-fung Peter, one of Hong Kong's most famous consultants.

On the eve of Lunar New Year, which falls on January 25, many are anxious to get their belongings and hear ideas about what the Rat Year holds.

Those who come into So's office may feel a little disoriented. Its oversized desk and elevated office chair closet facing each other – one of the many feng shui decorating options to enhance wealth and health.

"A feng shui teacher is like an interior designer," CNN Travel says with a smile.

"If something feels far away in someone's home, I change things to make them feel more comfortable."

Wearing a suit and a stylish, low ponytail, 60 years old, So is a teacher of various Chinese studies, such as feng shui (studying space and the environment), facial reading, palm and BaZi (reading her birth charts).

"When I was just a kid, I would go to a second-hand bookstore on Shanghai Street and pick up face-to-face books from the mountains of other publications," recalls So.

"In 1982, I was working at a hairdresser when my boss introduced me to a Chinese oracle master in Shanghai."

He spent the next years learning from the master and offering fortune-telling at Temple Street Market in Kowloon – amid discrimination as a lobster supplier.

"It was a fun time," says So. "My friends would be waiting for me on the floor – so we're going to have a drink and party at the Canton and DD Clubs then."

After six months of traveling to Tibet in 1987, He then returned to Hong Kong and opened a shop selling Tibetan religious objects and utensils.

"The store could be boring," he says. "So I put a sign on the door saying I knew how to read the properties. I made HK $ 8,000 [US$1,029] in the first month – which was a pretty decent paycheck back then – and was invited to go to Scandinavia for feng shui consulting, "says So.

Because of its capabilities it spread and eventually saw 1,000 customers each year. At one point, there was an 11-month waiting list to get an appointment. She is a household name, has made many appearances in Hong Kong television shows and starred in films.

The master attributes his success to a mix of BaZi and his presentation skills.

How a feng shui teacher travels

Today, So has slowed things down so he can have more time to pursue his passion for travel.

"Call me a holic trip," he says. "I've increased my prices so I'm not so busy right now and can travel more. I traveled 137 days last year."

Similarly, does a master feng shui travel differently? About.

"I travel like everyone else except for hotel rooms," he says. "I never stay in a room looking at a construction site or the last room in the hallway – or in a dead end. It's poor feng shui for health."

Feng shui can be used to decode a place's energy, but it should not dictate where travelers should or should not go, he says.

"According to Feng Shui readings, destinations east of China, such as Taiwan, central Japan and the west coast of the United States, are overshadowed by a major illness star next year.

"But you can't tell when it will hit. It should not deter you from exploring the places you want to go – just pay close attention when you go to these places."

So the first travel tip has nothing to do with feng shui: "Bring your dirty suitcase and clothes with you so you don't overdo yourself – you can walk around the world with this combo "

Chinese astrology and feng shui are not going to change your fate and predict exactly what will happen, Sho says.

"It's a calculation of probability and a study of statistics," he explains.

"It's about finding this law and the flow of the universe. When you know how to calculate it, you can predict trends for everything. If you enjoy a lucky turn, knowing that it can give you the confidence and courage they need to to start her own business, "she explains.

"If you are plagued by bad luck, recognizing that it can help you avoid unnecessary risks."
