Sony PlayStation Classic brings us closer to the nostalgic saturation of video games

Retro video games are fun, but until last year, it was hard to give as a gift. You can load a virtual console game gift card into modern consoles, but the choice is sporadic and gift cards are not fun to unwind. You can also go to the vintage material path, but buying old games from a reputable store can get expensive, and those older plastic and silicon piles degrade over time, no matter how well they are cared for and restored. Or, you could buy one of these unauthorized consoles loaded with bootleg versions of your favorite games. I took once for $ 30 from a flea market. It was fun, but the controller had only eight of his nine buttons and Mario was blue for some reason.

The Sony PlayStation Classic is the latest in a small parade of officially approved retro consoles. Play 20 old PlayStation games –Tekken 3 and Rayman-A pair of controllers, and a mini-version of the original, virtual gray console that debuted in 1995.

It even comes in a box that has the feeling of an old console box. While I usually think that packaging design is an overly valued feature in the gadget world, I like the box that comes with the PlayStation Classic. It's the kind of package that's fun to see when you cut the colorful wrapping paper. It takes you back to get a console for Christmas if you were lucky enough to try it out, or it helps to compensate for the console you never got.

Is it fun to play?

There are 20 games in PlayStation classic and some of them are hits, others are slightly complicated. Cool Boarders 2 is an obvious classic (I'm not sarcastic) and Final Fantasy VII is the kind of game that can eat hundreds of hours before you realize how addictive it is. Tekken 3 is still incredibly entertaining, and Metal Gear Solid it's so good you do not even have to rely on nostalgia to enjoy it.

Some titles, however, like Intelligent Qube, do not have the same virtual state. This was an awkward phase for games as they moved to more 3D worlds. Without the innovation of modernity, the awkward moves and the sensation of the camera may be more fragmentary than exciting. It would be awesome to see some other really iconiPlayStationon titles, like the original Tony Hawk Pro Skater or Tomb Raider, which was one of PlayStation's main titles. But, licensing is difficult. Crash Bandicoot, for example, would be amazing on such a machine, but the franchise just got a full remaster for the big consoles, which obviously took priority in a retro console.

Are the auditors good?

Controllers are one of the best in PlayStation Classic. They are not impossible and you get a couple of them in the box. If Sony really wanted to nail the old PlayStation emotion, it would have to include a really good controller and another controller outside the brand that was slightly broken so you could make your brother, your neighbor, your cousin or anyone else unlucky to be a two player must use it.

Seriously, however, the auditors are great. They do not have the DualShock controls for easier 3D motion, but the original Playstation pads did not even make any of these games really necessary. Each controller connects to the console via USB, so you can connect them to a computer if you also want, which is a nice added value.

Do you have extra features?

With other retro consoles like the Nintendo SNES Classic, you can get some extra bells and whistles to go with the gaming experience, such as the ability to spin back during a game if you immerse yourself and you do not want to endure playing a game fear again from beginning. The PlayStation Classic, however, mostly offers stock. You can only save one game per title to pick from where you stopped. You can not have many warehouses. And the menu system is good, but it's not as polished as the Nintendo machines.

Careful purchase for your children

I have two guys that are almost the same age as I was when I got the original PlayStation back in the full of new days in the mid-90s. And while they liked playing with the PlayStation Classic, it did not seem to understand why I thought it was so fun to try to get some kind of bad snowboard tricks with a crazy character into a game that clearly could never compete with the UHD 4K Xbox One and the Playstation 4 graphics that are customary.

They played some of the games and then went out to see what else they could play. That was not an option when I was a kid. When I got a $ 60 game, this was my entertainment for the immediate future. So the obvious choice was to spend hours grinding away random encounters to my level Final Fantasy characters or trying to unlock all hidden characters in Cool Boarders 2. This is no longer the case, so building these compulsive relationships with classic games is far more difficult to do.

If you buy it?

If you are a rational consumer, then your decision to buy should be a simple matter to consider the list of games. If any of them send you your careening down lane of memory, like a guide that had been too wassail at the holiday party party, then this product is for you. If you are looking for some classic toys to play and you do not have a specific affinity for any of them, then something like the Sega Genesis Classics collection, which takes you 53 games for $ 30 (and this is a retail with no discount holidays that is abundant year round) may be a better bet.

But if you buy it for a gift, it's hard to beat that. Sure, it would be much more attractive at $ 80, but the fact that it comes with two checkers makes it a gift that is immediately fun. You open it and you want to connect it immediately. And now that you are an adult, you can play it until 3am. without having to sit next to the system with the TV being quiet, so you can turn it off quickly if you listen to your parents going out in the kitchen for a little water.
